Methodology for Future 3D Interaction

After a flurry of activity in the mid to late 90's, 3D interaction research has slowed, still lacking a mastery of the domain. Listed as one of the open and crucial challenges (Brooks, 1999) for Virtual Reality (VR), it is surprising that success has not been more forthcoming. The simplest explanation is that 3D interaction is just plane hard (Herndon, et. al. 1994). Another explanation is that we have exhausted our successes with the current approaches and require new insights provided by new methodology to continue advancing the field.
